マガリの人生毎日是RAP

「magari is still alive」

Since 1998, I have been to Burning Man a total of eight times. I had never lived in the United States, and so I took a plane from Tokyo every year, and in 2000 and 2002 I headed for Black Rock Desert on a bicycle. I made lots of friends through Burning Man and every day was extremely enjoyable.

On March 11, 2011, Japan was struck by a huge earthquake and a devastating tsunami. A lot of buildings were destroyed and buried in the mud. There are over 100,000 people who are still unable to return to their homes.

Currently, there are a lot of volunteers taking part in rescue operations, digging around in the rubble and mud.

There is harmful dust everywhere and so it is necessary for the volunteers to wear masks over their mouths and goggles to protect their eyes. There is no gas and no electricity. Everyone is there at their own risk, even though the danger of further earthquakes and tsunamis is high. As all of them are volunteers, they do not get paid for their work. In terms of accommodation, priority is given to those who have lost their homes, and so the volunteers have to carry their own tents.

Trying to survive and work together towards a common goal. No spectators. Give and give. This was exactly the same as what I experienced at Burning Man. Because of this, I was instantly interested in becoming a volunteer. Although the work is hard, it gave me the same sense of satisfaction and achievement that I felt at Burning Man.

Over here, there are still no giant sculptures, bars, dance floors, critical tits, drugs, flaming arts, but I feel that this is actually not that important.

All that I learnt at Burning Man has been really useful to me. Thank you so much.
